M Nageswara Rao, the current interim CBI Director, has been promoted to the rank of Additional Director today.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has cleared name of Nageswara Rao today.
The government appointed the then joint director Nageshwar Rao to take interim charge of the CBI on October 24 following rift between CBI director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana.
CBI director Alok Verma and special director Rakesh Asthana were asked to proceed on leave in the midst of an internal rift over bribery allegations against the latter.
Nageshwar Rao is an IPS officer from Odisha cadre, joined CBI as joint director, promoted to additional director this year.
A chemistry post graduate from Osmania University Rao did his research in Madras IIT, before joining the IPS in 1986.
The government has overlooked all three additional directors, who are number three in the agency’s hierarchy, while appointing Nageshwar Rao.
A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had ordered M Nageswara Rao to not take any major policy decisions until it hears Verma and Asthana’s decision.
