High-level Committee led by PM Modi Sacks CBI Chief Alok Verma

New Delhi:

The High-powered committee comprising of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, LoP Mallikarjun Kharge and Supreme Court Judge A K Sikri sacked CBI Chief Alok Verma.

The committee met for the second time on Thursday to decide on the fate of reinstated CBI Chief Alok Verma. Verma has been made DG, Fire Sevices, Civil Defence & Home Guards.

Verma has been removed by majority vote 2:1. PM Modi and Justice AK Sikri voted for Verma’s removal as they found his continuance detrimental to institutional integrity. LoP and Congress leader Kharge vehemently opposed Verma’s sacking and demanded deferment.

Two days ago, the Supreme Court reinstated CBI Director Alok Verma. Verma was sent on forced leave by the government along with his deputy Special Director Rakesh Asthana. Verma challenged the decision in the SC. The Court had ruled that the panel of Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India and LoP will decide on Verma’s future.

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi nominated A K Sikri to take his place in the panel because he heard the case. The panel met on Wednesday night as well but the meeting was inconclusive.

After taking the charge, Verma revoked most of the transfers ordered by M Nageshwar Rao, who was appointed as the interim CBI chief by the government.

Earlier, LoP Kharge had said he asked for enquiry report by the Central Vigilance Commission into the issue. Kharge also demanded that Verma should get opportunity to present his case before the panel.
