IMD: ‘Gaja’ likely to intensify into severe cyclonic storm

Cyclonic storm Gaja will make landfall between Pamdan and Cuddalore today evening according to the India Meteorological Department. The IMD said that Gaja is “very likely” to intensify into severe cyclonic storm.

According to the IMD on 15 November rainfall is expected at most places in Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places over Tamilnadu & Puducherry. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places in Cuddalore, Nagappattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Tuticorin and Ramanathapuram districts.

On 16 November, rainfall is expected at most places with heavy falls at a few places and very heavy at isolated places very likely over interior Tamil Nadu.

In Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Rayalaseema rainfall is expected in most places on 15th and 16th November with heavy rainfall at isolated places, the press release issued by IMD said.

The IMD has advised the fishermen not to go into sea along & off Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts till 15th November.
The fishermen are advised not to venture into central parts of south & central Bay of Bengal and into southwest & adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal till 15th November.

The IMD said that damage is expected in Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal district of Puducherry.

The IMD added that major damage is expected to thatched huts/houses, roof tops may blow off and unattached metal sheets may fly. Power and communication lines are also expected to get damaged.
