Siachen now open for tourists, says Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh

Ladakh:

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh announced in Ladakh on Monday that Siachen area is now open for tourists.

Singh said the government has decided to open the entire area from Siachen base camp to Kumar Post for tourism purposes.

While addressing a function in eastern Ladakh to inaugurate Col Chewang Rinchin Bridge on Shyok River, Singh said that Ladakh has tremendous potential in Tourism. Better connectivity in Ladakh would certainly bring tourists in large numbers.

He said that this way people will be able to observe and appreciate the tough work done by Army jawans and engineers in extreme weather and inhospitable terrains in the area.

The Siachen Glacier is located at the height of around 20,000 ft in the Karakoram range and is known as the highest militarised zone in the world. The soldiers battle frostbite and high winds to guard the area from Pakistan.

Avalanches and landslides are common at the glacier during the winters and temperatures can drop to as low as minus 60 degrees Celsius

According to official figures, the Army lost 163 personnel at the world’s highest battlefield during the last 10 years.
